Maria island is one of Tasmania’s must do experiences. The island is a 70 minute drive from the Hobart CBD to Triabunna followed by a short ferry ride to access the island. Maria Island is approximately 115 square kilometres in size and one of many National parks in Tasmania. The island was once a bustling probationary convict settlement and many of these colonial buildings still stand today. The island is now almost uninhabited except for our Park Rangers.

Once on the island you will experience beautiful panoramic landscapes and coastlines filled with hundreds of species of iconic Tasmanian wildlife such as Wombats, Kangaroos, Tasmanian Devils and a large number of beautiful bird species. You can of course choose to extend your stay on Maria as one of the original convict buildings has now been converted to a bunkhouse.

There are many walking tracks leading to some amazing scenery and you can take your bike and cycle many of the tracks on the island too. My personal favourite is to simply stop walking or biking and take a few minutes to observe the unique wildlife, in particular the wombats.

Despite visiting Maria Island many times, it is one of my favourite places to return to.
