A Winter Visit to Maria Island and the Island of Seals

Living locally here in Tasmania, I’m always reminded how lucky we are to have incredible places like this right on our doorstep. Even after spending years exploring different parts of the state, there are still moments that completely surprise me, and this recent trip to Maria Island was definitely one of them.

With clear skies, sunshine, and very calm seas, it turned out to be the perfect day to explore the hidden corners of Ile Des Phoques, the “Island of Seals.” Winter in Tasmania can often be unpredictable, so having sunshine and gentle winds in June felt like a real gift. We departed from Triabunna in the morning with a small group onboard, which made the whole trip feel relaxed and personal.

As we approached Ile des Phoques, everything slowed down. We were reminded to keep quiet and move slowly so we wouldn’t disturb the seals resting along the rocky cliffs. From a distance, we could already see dozens of seals sunbathing on the rocks.

We got even luckier as we had a school of dolphins that magically appeared beside the boat to join us on our visit to the seals. It makes me wonder if they had some magic remote control that works with the dolphins (hmm… food for thought!)

Our guide shared the history of the island. Seal hunting began here in the early 1800s, sadly impacting the local seal population for many decades ahead. We were glad seeing them now relaxed and in healthy numbers. I’m hoping to have the opportunity to dive with them in the near future, while ensuring I don’t disturb them.

One of my favourite moments of the day was stopping near the Tasmania’s largest granite sea caves for morning tea, a cup of hot coffee and some little homemade treats.

It is hard to describe that piece of calm while surrounded by towering cliffs, clear ocean, and the sounds of seals echoing nearby. It truly felt like stepping into a hidden part of Tasmania that few people get to experience.

After saying goodbye to the seals (and yes, they really did seem to say goodbye back - you could hear them calling!). We made our way towards Fossil Cliffs and further down.

Sitting up on the open deck, we felt truly immersed - the Roaring 40s, the salt spray, the movement of the boat - it was raw and fun. We stopped in a calm bay for lunch, smoked salmon salad, a glass of local wine, stunning cliff views, and peaceful ocean surroundings. Honestly, it was hard to imagine a better lunch setting.

We were also lucky enough to travel further down towards Mistaken Cape post lunch. It was interesting to see how different the cliffs look following the coastline of Maria Island.

After hanging out with him/her and their wombat friends, we took a walk around part of the island learning more about its history. We listened to stories about the old cement works and convict settlement - Maria Island really is one of those places where nature and history blend together beautifully.

Before returning to Triabunna, we made one final stop at the Painted Cliffs.

The late afternoon sunlight hit the sandstone at just the right angle, bringing out the incredible swirling patterns and colours across the rock face. It felt like a perfect ending for the day.

This experience was so much more than just a day trip. It reminded me of how special Tasmania really is, and how I continue to falling in love with this place.
