Restaurants in Hobart are many and varied! Start your day with hipster cafes that serve great coffee and an amazing smashed avocado (did you know that Tasmania has an avocado farm?). Bakeries are also a favourite staple for many locals, so grab a coffee and a freshly baked pastry and either eat in, or head down to the waterfront for some people watching while you munch.
Breakfast and Lunch
Some of our staff's favourite breakfast spots include:
Small Fry; an uber personal experience with the main seating surrounding the cafe's chef, which feels a little like you've been invited inside his home. If you're up early between Monday and Friday, you might get a taste of their very popular doughnuts, or stop in for breakfast and a coffee from 7.30 am. The team open from 8.30 am on weekends serving coffee and sweets.
Pigeon Hole Cafe; this Hobart institution is a popular breakfast spot in suburban West Hobart, only a short walk outside the CBD. Run by the owners of a nearby farm, it obviously serves locally grown, seasonal produce alongside some great coffee.
Machine Laundry Café; located in Salamanca Square and serving some fantastic vegetarian (although not exclusively) breakfast and lunch fare. Tucked in the back corner of Salamanca Square near the oversized chess board, you'd be forgiven for not noticing the place, except for the hum of a popular breakfast spot and people milling about having a great time with friends.
Born in Brunswick; bustling North Hobart hosts many a great breakfast spot, not least of all, Born in Brunswick. Open Tuesday to Sunday, this cafe serves an all day breakfast menu and some great lunch options that centre around sustainable and locally sourced product.
Dinner
Dinner can range from a casual bite in mid-town, tapas in North Hobart (NoHo to the locals), a fresh seafood extravaganza or a seven course degustation fit for even the fussiest food critic. Tasmania is a chef's playground, with several high profile chefs holidaying here ignognito. Here is a small selection of some of Hobart's popular dinner spots:
Faro; the newest addition to the Mona experience serves European inspired bar. You'll want to embrace the share plate philosophy as there's so much to choose from and indulge in the in house art at the same time. An experience to remember!
The Glass House; located in a modern, floating glass and concrete box on Hobart's waterfront at Sullivan's Cove, this restaurant has views to die for! The team serve fantastic cocktails and fresh, seasonal dishes with an international influence.
Bar Wa Izakaya; a favourite for several of our team, this casual Japanese Gastro-pub is a unique, social dining experience located in Noho and also great to stop in for a drink or two at one of their two bars. The kitchen focusses on creating shareable Japanese delicacies using local, fresh ingredients.
Templo; a trendy, neighbourhood restaurant with room for around 20 diners, this little gem serves lunch Saturday - Monday and has two dinner sittings from Thursday to Monday. The menu is ever changing, uber seasonal and can be paired with a unique selection of wines. You can book up to 45 days in advance and it is highly recommended you do so to avoid disappointment!
Pearl + Co.; Located on Victoria Dock, this waterfront bar and restaurant serves some of the freshest Tasmanian seafood and a generously appointed bar. Try freshly shucked oysters, local wild fish ceviche, seafood pasta and locally caught fish and squid while watching the waterfront world go by!
