Description

Could we please update the listing copy as follows:

Mona is the playground and megaphone of its creator, David Walsh. Located just up the river from Hobart’s waterfront, Mona’s three-level subterranean architecture showcases the highlights (and lowlights) of his private collection of art and antiquities (which is the largest in the southern hemisphere).

Unlike other museums, Mona doesn't have labels on the wall. They have the O. Use it to find out about the art on display, and other stuff. The O shows you what’s nearby: artworks, bars, restaurants, music, performances, and whatever else is going on.

As well as hosting an ever-evolving exhibitions program, Mona is home to Phrontisterion, an enormous library filled with rare books and art. If you feel like indulging your foodie side, make sure you visit Mona’s two restaurants: The Source Restaurant, their temple to seasonal local produce, and Faro, which is located within the museum and puts art on the menu. There’s also an on-site winery, Moorilla (home to some of Tasmania’s oldest vines), eateries, bars, luxury accommodation, daily live music and a recording studio.

The best way to get there is to jump aboard one of the super-flash fast ferries—in fact, the approach by water is built into the design of the museum. The ferries depart Hobart throughout the day, cruising up and down the River Derwent for thirty minutes between Brooke St Pier and Mona.
