Open Hours: Open 9am to 5 pm. 7 days per week (closed Christmas Day)
The Richmond Gaol is Australia's oldest existing colonial Gaol. The Gaol was built in 1825 and is one of the best preserved convict structures still existing in Tasmania. You can step inside a solitary confinement cell measuring just one by two metres (6x3 feet), as well as see the chain-gang sleeping rooms, the flogging yard, the cook house and holding rooms, all with historical relics and documents to bring the convict past to life.
The Richmond Gaol is an historical attraction where visitors can pay to do a self-guided tour of the site. We also have a full stocked souvenir and gift shop.
Mission Statement:
To provide visitors with a unique experience by being part of Tasmania’s history and experience the sights and sounds of early prison life.
